Setting expectations before a first sight test
Two things surprise people at a first sight test. The first is that it examines the health of the eye as well as measuring a prescription, which is why it runs longer than they budgeted for. The second is that choosing frames and being measured afterwards is a separate piece of time nobody warned them about.
Why this is not the general answer
The handling pattern for first visit questions holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.
- A sight test is a health examination as well as a measurement, so the honest answer to how long it takes is longer than expected, and the reason for the length is the part worth publishing.
- Retinal photography or a field screening is offered at many practices with a charge of its own, and somebody who meets that at the till rather than on a page reads it as a sale bolted onto a health check.
- Choosing a frame and being measured for it is effectively a second appointment, often on the same visit, and it is the half people fail to allow for and then rush through.
- A child's test is a different examination again, because it does not depend on the child reading or answering, and that single fact is what decides whether a parent bothers to book at all.

It gives the length with the reason attached, because the reason is what makes a longer appointment acceptable rather than irritating. It warns about the frame selection time, which is the half nobody plans for. And it puts the additional charges in front of somebody before the visit rather than at the till.

The trigger. The visitor describes something about their own eyes or their sight while asking what happens, or asks whether they need a test.

Never say this here
Out of bounds
- Never say what a test will find, or that a prescription is likely to have changed.
- Never say a child is too young to be tested, since a test does not depend on the child reading or answering.
- Never describe an additional screening as included when it carries a charge of its own.
- Never say how long somebody will be in the practice altogether, because that depends on the test and on the dispensing.
Questions
- Why make so much of the frame selection time?
- Because that is where the visit overruns and where somebody feels rushed into a decision they will wear on their face every day. A customer who arrived expecting it does not choose a frame in four minutes with a meter running.
- Should it list the extra charges unprompted?
- Yes, whenever somebody asks what happens. Every charge met at the desk rather than on a page is read as a sale attached to a health check, whatever it actually is.
- Can it tell a parent whether their child needs testing?
- No. It can say from what age you test, how a children's test is run and that it does not depend on the child reading. Whether a particular child needs to be seen is not a question it may touch.
