Getting a pharmacy opening hours answer exactly right

For most businesses a wrong closing time is an inconvenience. For a pharmacy it means somebody arrives at a locked door without the medicine they need tonight, which is why this question deserves more care here than anywhere else.

Why this is not the general answer

The handling pattern for opening hours holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.

  • A wrong closing time at a pharmacy is not a minor inaccuracy, because the person asking may be travelling to collect something they need that night.
  • Pharmacies close in the middle of the day in a way most shops do not, so an answer that gives only an opening and a closing time can still be wrong.
  • Bank holiday and rota arrangements change year to year and are the single most commonly stale piece of information on a pharmacy website.
  • The question is usually a deadline in disguise, will you still be open when I finish work, so a bare list of times is a worse answer than a direct one.

How it arrives

  • what time do you close today
  • are you open at lunchtime
  • are you open on the bank holiday
  • will you still be open at half five
  • what time do you open on a sunday
  • are you open over christmas

What has to be indexed for this to work

Material behind this answer
Weekly hours including any midday closureThe closure over lunch stated explicitly rather than left as a gap between two times. It is the detail that catches people out.
Bank holiday hours for the current yearListed separately from the weekly ones, so it is obvious they are different and obvious when they were last updated.
The rota you take part inWhere the current rota is published and how somebody finds which pharmacy is open, if you take part in one.
The dispensing cut offThe latest a prescription can be brought in for same day dispensing, which is the deadline behind most of these questions.

The reply

A reply worth copying
Our hours are on the contact page, and we close over lunch, so it is worth checking that before you set off [1]. Bank holiday hours are listed separately there because they are different from a normal week [2]. If you are bringing a prescription in and need it the same day, there is a cut off time on that page as well.

The lunchtime closure is volunteered rather than waiting to be asked, because it is the detail that produces wasted journeys. Keeping the bank holiday hours visibly separate signals they are not the weekly ones. The dispensing cut off answers the deadline that was actually behind the question.

Where it stops

The trigger. The visitor says they need a medicine before you close, or asks whether something can be dispensed in time today.

The handover, worded
Please ring the pharmacy on the number above so the team can check, because whether something can be dispensed today depends on what it is, and I cannot see the dispensary.

It stops answering before it guesses, says who will pick it up, and asks for the one thing that makes a reply possible. Nothing about it reads as a dead end.

Never say this here

Out of bounds

  • Never state hours that are not on the page the assistant is reading from.
  • Never say the pharmacy will stay open late or open early for somebody.
  • Never say a prescription can be dispensed before closing.
  • Never state another pharmacy's hours.

Questions

Why does this matter more at a pharmacy?
Because the journey is often made for something the person needs that day, and by somebody who may not find it easy to travel. A wrong hour here has a real cost.
How do we keep bank holiday hours current?
Keep them on one page and point the assistant at that page. Anything uploaded as a copy will keep being quoted long after you have changed your mind.
Should it mention the dispensing cut off unprompted?
When the question is about closing time, yes. Half the people asking are not asking about the door, they are asking whether they can still hand something in.
