The patch test that has to happen before the appointment
A salon booking enquiry has a hidden prerequisite in it. Colour services require a skin test a set time in advance, and a client who books online for tomorrow without one arrives to be turned away, which costs the salon the slot and the client the day. The most valuable thing an assistant does in this trade is raise the patch test during the enquiry rather than at the door.
Why this is not the general answer
The handling pattern for appointment booking holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.
- There is a clock running before the appointment rather than during it: the patch test has to be done a stated period in advance and stays valid for a stated period afterwards, and both numbers matter.
- Manufacturers of hair colour require a skin test before use, and insurance and product liability terms in most markets follow that requirement, so this is a safety rule rather than a preference the salon can flex.
- Appointment length is a second hidden variable, because a client booking a colour and expecting ninety minutes has planned their day around a number nobody told them.
- None of the booking itself can be done here, so the whole job is making sure that when the client does book, they book the right service, for the right length, having done the test.
How it arrives
- do i need a patch test
- how long before my appointment does the patch test have to be
- i had colour with you last year do i need another one
- how long does a full head of highlights take
- can i book a cut and colour on the same day
- how do i book an appointment
What has to be indexed for this to work
| The patch test policy in full | Which services require one, how many hours or days in advance, how long a test stays valid, what happens if a client has had colour with you before but not recently, whether a test can be done at home or must be in the salon, and that an appointment will be refused without a valid one. This is the clearest document the salon should own. |
|---|---|
| Honest appointment lengths per service | How long each service actually takes including the long ones, and which combinations can be done in a single visit. A client who books a colour correction expecting two hours and is there for five has had a bad day regardless of the result. |
| How booking actually works here | Whether there is an online system, how far ahead the diary opens, whether a deposit is taken at the point of booking, whether new clients need a consultation first, and how to reach the salon by phone. The assistant does not book, so it needs to hand over cleanly to whatever does. |
| Consultation requirements before certain services | Which services need an in person consultation before they can be booked at all, usually corrections, extensions and anything structural, and how long the consultation takes and whether it is charged. This saves the appointment that would have been abandoned at the mirror. |
The reply
Any colour service needs a patch test done in the salon at least the published interval before your appointment, and a previous test only counts if it is still inside its validity period, so if it has been a while since your last colour with us you will need a fresh one. A full head of highlights is usually a long appointment, so it is worth allowing the published time rather than booking something straight afterwards. Booking itself is done through the salon rather than here, so use the booking link or give us a ring and we can get the test in first.
It leads with the prerequisite, since a client who books first and reads this second has already lost the appointment. It handles the lapsed test case explicitly, because that client believes they are exempt. The appointment length warning is given as a planning fact, and it closes by handing over to the actual booking route rather than pretending to take the booking.
Where it stops
The trigger. Any attempt to book, any request for a specific appointment time, and any request to have a colour service without a valid patch test.
I cannot see the diary or book an appointment, so please use the booking link or call the salon and they will find you a time. If it is a colour service, mention the patch test when you call so it can be arranged first. Leave your name and email here if you would rather the salon called you back.
It stops answering before it guesses, says who will pick it up, and asks for the one thing that makes a reply possible. Nothing about it reads as a dead end.
Never say this here
Out of bounds
- That a patch test can be skipped, shortened, done at home or done on the day of a colour.
- That an appointment time is available, since the diary is not visible here.
- That a previous patch test is still valid, which depends on a record only the salon holds.
- That two services will fit into a single visit, which depends on the stylist's column.
Questions
- Can it enforce the patch test rule?
- It can state it clearly to everybody who asks about a colour service, which prevents most of the problem. The failures happen when somebody books online for tomorrow without knowing the requirement exists, and an assistant that raises it during the enquiry saves that appointment rather than losing it at the door.
- Can it book, or check whether a slot is free?
- No. It has no access to the diary and cannot write to one. It answers the questions that come before the booking and then points at your booking link or takes a name, an email and a message for a call back.
- Somebody says they had a test elsewhere. What should it say?
- That it cannot confirm any test it has no record of and that the salon will need to check, then hand over. A test done at another salon on another product line is not a test on yours, and this is not a judgement to make in a chat window.
