Cancel it and the size goes back on the site within the hour
Everywhere else, cancelling is a neutral act with a small cost in time. Here it can be permanent. A piece bought once for a season and released back to the site at half past eleven at night is gone by morning, and the customer who cancelled intending to reorder next payday has not delayed a purchase, they have ended it. That is the fact the reply exists to deliver, and it has to arrive before anybody presses anything.
Why this is not the general answer
The handling pattern for cancellations holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.
- Cancelling a seasonal line is irreversible in practice, because the unit goes straight back to the site and a size in the middle of the run does not survive the evening, so the usual advice to cancel and reorder later is actively wrong here.
- Most cancellation requests in this trade are partial: somebody deliberately ordered two or three sizes and now wants to drop the ones they no longer need, which is ordinary behaviour rather than an error, and it is a harder thing to do than cancelling the whole order.
- A pre-order cancels on different terms from a stocked piece, since there is nothing on a rail to release, the money may already have moved, and the drop it belongs to has not happened yet.
- The usual fallback of letting it arrive and returning it is weaker here, because a reduced line often carries a shorter window or an exclusion that the same garment at full price would not have carried.
How it arrives
- can i take one size off my order
- i ordered the same dress twice by accident
- can i cancel my preorder before the drop lands
- if i cancel will i be able to order it again
- can i cancel just one item not the whole thing
- will i lose the size if i cancel now
What has to be indexed for this to work
| What happens to a cancelled unit | Whether it goes back to the site immediately, and whether that differs between a repeat line and a seasonal buy. This is the sentence that changes what the customer does, and no returns policy anywhere contains it. |
|---|---|
| Whether a single line can be cancelled | Most of these requests are partial rather than whole, and shops differ on whether one line can come out of an order at all. Say which you are, because the customer's alternative is cancelling everything and reordering, which loses them every size at once. |
| Pre-order cancellation terms, kept separate | When money is taken, whether a pre-order can be cancelled before the drop, and what happens if the window moves. Folded into the general cancellation page it produces the stocked answer given to a pre-order customer, which is wrong in both directions. |
| The window and the exclusions on the line they are cancelling | What the return position would be if they let it arrive instead, specifically whether that piece is reduced and whether the window is shorter. The choice between cancelling and returning cannot be made without this and it is never on the same page. |
The reply
Before anything else, worth knowing: a cancelled piece goes back on the site straight away, and this is a seasonal line rather than one we repeat, so a size released tonight is very unlikely to be there tomorrow [1]. I cannot cancel or change an order, so if you still want to, the thing that helps is speed rather than detail. Send your name, the email you ordered with, the order number and exactly which line you want removed to our contact address now. Taking one line off an order is not the same job as cancelling the whole thing, and it is worth saying which you mean so nobody cancels more than you intended. If it has already gone, letting it arrive and returning it is the other route, though on a reduced piece the window is shorter than on full price, so check that before you decide [2].
The permanence warning leads because it changes the decision and is worthless after the fact. The refusal is stated plainly but does not stop the reply being useful, since the only thing that helps is the message reaching a person quickly. The partial cancellation is called out because a vague request gets read as the whole order, and that is the version that loses the customer all three sizes.
Where it stops
The trigger. The visitor asks for any order or any line within one to be cancelled, removed or amended, including a pre-order before its drop.
I cannot cancel or amend anything. Leave your name, the email on the order, the order number and exactly which pieces you want taken off, and send it now rather than later, because on a cancellation the timing is the whole thing.
It stops answering before it guesses, says who will pick it up, and asks for the one thing that makes a reply possible. Nothing about it reads as a dead end.
Never say this here
Out of bounds
- Never say an order or a line has been cancelled, because the assistant writes into nothing and the customer stops watching for a parcel that is still coming.
- Never suggest cancelling and reordering later on a seasonal line, which sounds sensible and hands the size to somebody else permanently.
- Never quote the full price return window at somebody cancelling a reduced piece, since the exclusions on that line may be different.
- Never describe a pre-order cancellation using the terms that apply to a stocked garment, as the money and the drop behave differently.
Questions
- Can it cancel an order if we connect it to the shop?
- No, in any configuration. It reads material and cannot write into anything, so cancelling, amending and holding are all outside it. What it saves is the twenty minutes between a customer noticing and somebody in the warehouse reading about it.
- Why warn people that they might lose the size?
- Because it is the only advice in this reply that changes an outcome. Somebody who knows the piece will not come back either lets it arrive and returns it properly, or accepts the risk deliberately. Somebody who does not know cancels casually and then writes an angry message a week later.
- How do we stop it treating a partial cancellation as a full one?
- Write the two as separate operations in the material, with different names. Retrieval follows the document. One blended cancellation page produces one blended answer, and the expensive version is the customer who wanted one line removed and lost the order.
