What a quote needs before anybody can write one
A quote here is not a request for a discount. It is a specification: a modular run counted unit by unit, a corner facing one way rather than the other, a cloth grade, and sometimes a size that appears in no catalogue. The work is in the gathering rather than the arithmetic, and gathering is the part a chat window can genuinely do without pretending to anything.
Why this is not the general answer
The handling pattern for quotes and estimates holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.
- The quote carries an expiry, because cloth ranges are withdrawn and grades are repriced by the mills, so a figure written in one season cannot honestly be honoured in the next.
- Handedness has to be stated and it is the field most often wrong. A chaise described from where somebody is standing and a chaise described from where they will be sitting are opposite ends of the same sofa.
- A made to measure piece is priced against a drawing rather than a catalogue line, so there is no published figure anywhere for the assistant to find even in principle.
- The quote usually comes out of an appointment rather than a form, so whether that appointment is free, charged, or redeemable against an order is what the customer is really deciding about.
How it arrives
- can you price up a corner unit for me
- how much for a made to measure size
- i want the whole living room priced
- how long does a quote stay valid for
- do you charge for the design appointment
- can you quote for a left hand facing chaise
What has to be indexed for this to work
| The information a quote cannot be written without | Room dimensions, the pieces, the cloth grade, the handedness of any corner, the delivery address and anything already in the room the piece has to work around. Published as a list, it turns the assistant into the thing that fills the form in properly. |
|---|---|
| How long a quote stands, and why | The validity period with the reason attached, which is that cloths get withdrawn and grades get repriced. Customers read an expired quote as a shop going back on its word unless the reason was in writing at the time. |
| Your appointment terms | Whether a design or measuring visit is charged, whether the charge comes off an order, and how long it takes. This is what somebody is actually weighing up when they ask what a quote costs. |
| How handedness is described in your business | The convention in one sentence, with the position it is described from, and a diagram if you have one. Every business in this trade has a convention and almost none publishes it, which is why the wrong corner gets built. |
The reply
I cannot price a build, but I can tell you exactly what is needed so it does not come back for a second round. A quote here wants the room dimensions, the pieces, the cloth grade, the handedness of any corner or chaise, and the delivery address [1]. Handedness is the one that trips people, so it is worth saying which way we describe it: ours is stated as you look at the piece from the room rather than from the seat [2]. Quotes stand for the period printed on them, because cloths get withdrawn and grades get repriced, so a figure does not hold indefinitely. Leave your name, an email and those details and somebody will price it and come back to you.
Naming the fields is the whole value, since a quote that returns for missing information costs the buyer a week and the shop a phone call. Publishing the handedness convention in the reply is worth more than any figure, because a corner built the wrong way round is the most expensive avoidable mistake available. Giving the reason quotes expire keeps the expiry from reading as a sales tactic.
Where it stops
The trigger. The visitor asks for a figure on any build, supplies room dimensions, or wants a made to measure size priced.
I cannot price anything, and a number from me would be a guess against a drawing nobody has made yet. Leave your name, an email, the room dimensions and the pieces and cloth you have in mind, and somebody who prices these will come back to you.
It stops answering before it guesses, says who will pick it up, and asks for the one thing that makes a reply possible. Nothing about it reads as a dead end.
Never say this here
Out of bounds
- Never produce a figure for a modular run or a made to measure piece, neither of which has a published price to read from.
- Never assume the handedness of a corner from a description, because the same words mean opposite things depending on where the person was standing.
- Never say a quote will be honoured after its validity date, since the cloth behind it may no longer be woven.
- Never advise on what will work in a room described in a message, which is a measuring job done in the room itself.
Questions
- Can it give even a rough estimate?
- No, and rough is the dangerous word. An estimate offered in a chat window becomes the number the real quote gets compared against, and the conversation from then on is about a discrepancy rather than about furniture.
- What is the highest value thing to publish here?
- The list of what a quote needs, followed by the handedness convention. Between them they remove most of the back and forth, and the assistant can walk somebody through both without deciding a single thing.
- Can it book the design appointment?
- It cannot. It has no diary and writes nowhere. It can say what the visit involves, whether it is charged and whether the charge comes off an order, then take the details so somebody can ring and book it.
