What a membership actually costs in month one

Every gym advertises a monthly number and almost nobody pays only that number in their first month. There is a joining fee, sometimes an admin fee, sometimes a part month, and the off peak tier that looked cheaper turns out to end at four in the afternoon. The prospect asking is trying to work out the real figure, and the club that answers it honestly wins the ones who were going to stay.

Why this is not the general answer

The handling pattern for pricing questions holds across every trade. What follows is the part that does not.

  • This is a pre-join question from somebody who has not signed anything, so the whole value is in conversion, and the honest answer converts better than the flattering one because the flattering one produces a cancellation in week two.
  • The published headline price is almost never the answer, since the joining fee and the tier structure sit between the poster and the bank account.
  • Off peak is the tier that causes the arguments: it is defined in hours, those hours are specific to the club, and a member who assumed evenings were included has bought the wrong thing.
  • Unlike the salon version of this question, the price is genuinely fixed and publishable, so refusing to quote would be evasive rather than careful, and the discipline here is completeness rather than caution.

How it arrives

  • how much is membership a month
  • is there a joining fee
  • what times can i use an off peak membership
  • do you do a student discount
  • is there a contract or can i pay monthly
  • how much is a day pass

What has to be indexed for this to work

Material behind this answer
Every tier with its total first costThe monthly price, the joining or admin fee, and what a first month therefore comes to, per tier. Publishing the total rather than the headline is the difference between a prospect who joins and one who joins and then feels misled.
Off peak defined in hours, per dayThe actual hours, including whether weekends are included and whether they differ, and what happens if an off peak member arrives at peak time. Off peak means nothing until it is a timetable, and this is where most tier complaints begin.
What each tier includes and excludesClasses, pool, sauna, guest passes, multi site access, and whether any of it is charged separately. A member who assumed classes were included and finds they are extra has a pricing complaint even though the price was correct.
Concessions and casual optionsStudent, corporate, off peak and concession rates with the proof required and how often it is checked, plus day passes, class drop in prices and any trial. The casual prices matter because a large share of enquiries are from people who are not ready to join.

The reply

A reply worth copying
The standard membership is the published monthly price, and there is a joining fee on top at sign up, so a first month comes to more than the headline figure before it settles to the monthly amount. The off peak tier is cheaper but runs to the published cut off in the afternoon on weekdays, so if you train after work it is not the one to take. Classes are included on the standard tier, and day passes are available if you would rather try it before committing.

It gives the first month total rather than the poster price, which is the actual question. It then does the thing a sales desk would do and steers the prospect away from the cheaper tier that would not suit them, which costs a few pounds a month and prevents a cancellation. The day pass is offered last as a lower commitment route rather than as a fallback.

Where it stops

The trigger. A request for a discount, a corporate or multi member deal, or any question about a promotion that is not in the indexed material.

The handover, worded
I can only give you the prices we publish, so for a corporate rate, a group of you joining together or anything currently on offer, the membership team is the right place. Leave your name and email and they will come back to you. I can tell you the standard and off peak prices, the joining fee and what each tier includes now.

It stops answering before it guesses, says who will pick it up, and asks for the one thing that makes a reply possible. Nothing about it reads as a dead end.

Never say this here

Out of bounds

  • A monthly price without the joining fee, when a prospect is asking what it costs.
  • That a discount can be given, or a joining fee waived.
  • That off peak covers a time that is not in the published hours.
  • That a price is held for a period, when promotions are not visible here.

Questions

Does publishing the joining fee lose us sign ups?
It loses the sign ups that were going to cancel in week two and complain about the first payment. A prospect who sees the real first month figure and joins anyway has bought what they think they bought, which is the membership that stays.
Can it quote a current promotion?
Only if the promotion is in the indexed material and current. This is a good reason to point it at the live membership page rather than an uploaded price list, because a stale offer quoted with a citation is worse than no offer at all.
What about somebody comparing us to another gym?
It answers from your material only, so it can state your prices and what is included and should not characterise anybody else's. What helps most is a complete inclusions list, since most of those comparisons turn on whether classes and the pool are extra.
