Comparison

Where Intercom is more than you need, and where it is not

Intercom sells a support department: a shared inbox, ticketing, a help centre, and an AI agent that works across the channels those things arrive on. If what you actually have is a website and a folder of documents, you are being quoted for a department you have not hired.

What Intercom actually is

Intercom is a customer service platform. The core of it is a shared inbox with ticketing, a messenger that sits on your site and in your app, a hosted help centre, and reporting on top of both. It is sold per seat, and the published seat prices on the date this was checked were Essential at $29 a seat a month, Advanced at $85, and Expert at $132, with the higher tiers adding team inboxes, workflow automation, single sign on, HIPAA support and service level agreements.

Its AI agent is Fin, and Fin is billed separately from seats, at $0.99 per outcome. Intercom defines an outcome on its own pricing page as a customer confirming their issue is resolved, or not asking for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completing a workflow including a handoff, and states that you are charged once per conversation even where several questions were answered inside it.

Fin is not confined to the website widget. Intercom's own material for it describes it working across voice, chat, email, Slack and social, and says it can be bought and pointed at other tools without buying seats. Intercom also publishes an average resolution rate for Fin across its customer base, which is a claim about their fleet rather than about your documents, and should be read that way.

So the honest summary is that Intercom is a platform purchase with a usage meter attached, and the meter is tied to outcomes rather than to messages. That is a coherent way to sell a support team's tooling. It is a strange way to buy a question answering widget for one marketing site. Every figure above is Intercom's published list price on the date in the checked field. Prices move, so read their pricing page and ours before you decide.

Reasons to choose Intercom instead

Written to be used rather than to be waved at. If any of these describe you, this is the wrong product and the rest of the page will not change that.

  • You have people answering tickets. Intercom's inbox, assignment rules, team inboxes and reporting are the product, and none of that exists here. If two or more humans need to share a queue, this comparison is already over.
  • Your customers reach you somewhere other than your website. Fin is documented as working across voice, chat, email, Slack and social. Askably answers on your website and nowhere else, and no amount of configuration changes that.
  • Your volume is genuinely low and spiky. At $0.99 an outcome you pay for what gets resolved, so a site that fields forty real questions in a quiet month pays for forty. A flat monthly fee is worse than a meter when the meter barely runs.
  • You need the compliance and identity work. Intercom publishes single sign on, HIPAA support, service level agreements and multibrand support on its higher tier. Those are procurement requirements, and procurement requirements do not bend.
  • You want a hosted help centre with the AI reading from it. Intercom hosts the articles, serves them, and grounds the agent in them. Askably reads your site or your files but does not host a knowledge base for you.

Reasons to choose this one

  • The price does not move with your team or your success. Free at $0, Starter at $29 a month, Growth at $99, Agency at $299. No seat count, no per outcome charge, and no bill that grows because the assistant got better at its job.
  • Every answer carries numbered citations back to the passage it came from, so the person reading it can check the assistant rather than trust it.
  • Below a match threshold you set, it refuses without reaching the model at all, and returns a fallback message you wrote. That is a hard floor, not a tone instruction, and retrieved material is treated as data rather than as instructions to follow.
  • Removing our name from the widget is included on every paid tier, starting at $29 a month. There is no white label charge at any price.
  • You control how it looks down to custom CSS: colours and dark colours, fonts, radius, launcher icon and label, position, size, greeting, placeholder, suggested questions and the disclaimer line. The launcher runs in a closed shadow root and the panel in its own frame, so it cannot collide with your page styles.

What we could not verify

Listing this is more useful than filling it in. Every line here is something that was not clearly published, or was behind a sign-up.

  • Whether each listed seat price is the monthly billing figure or the annual billing figure was not stated plainly beside every tier.
  • Volume pricing for Fin outcomes at scale, and any negotiated enterprise terms, are not published.

Questions

Is this a replacement for Intercom?
Only for the part of Intercom that answers questions on your website. There is no shared inbox, no ticketing, no help centre hosting and no channel beyond your own site. If you use Intercom as a support desk, moving here would remove the desk.
How do outcome pricing and a flat fee actually compare?
It depends entirely on volume, and you should do the arithmetic rather than take a side. At $0.99 an outcome, 1,000 resolved conversations is around $990 before seats. The $29 tier here allows 1,000 replies. A reply is not an outcome, so compare the definitions before comparing the numbers.
Can it hand a conversation to a person the way the Intercom messenger does?
Not live. When a visitor asks for a person it collects a name, an email and a message and sends that to an address you nominate. That is an enquiry, not a chat transfer, and if live handover matters you should stay with Intercom.
Does it answer on WhatsApp or email like Fin does?
No. It answers on your website only. There is no messaging channel, no social channel, no phone and no email agent.
