The narrow slice of Zendesk that most small sites actually use

This page is about one part of Zendesk: the AI that answers instead of a person. Everything else Zendesk does, the ticketing, the routing, the workforce tooling, has no counterpart here, and comparing the whole suite to a widget would be dishonest.

What Zendesk actually is

Zendesk sells a customer service suite priced per agent. On the date checked the published figures were Support Team at $19 an agent a month billed annually, Suite Team at $55, Suite Professional at $115, and Suite Enterprise with Copilot as custom pricing through sales. That is the seat cost before any AI usage is counted.

Its AI agents are described as included in every Suite and Support plan, with pricing based on the outcomes they deliver. Zendesk's own wording is that paying per automated resolution means you pay only for requests successfully resolved by the AI agent without escalation to a human. The service plan includes an allowance that can be applied to resolution usage at no extra cost, and resolutions are placed into tiers according to complexity and the value delivered.

On grounding, Zendesk describes connecting AI agents to your help centre and to external sources such as document drives and PDF files, and says existing knowledge and policies can be used to automate requests without separate training or setup. The agents are positioned as handling multi step workflows and taking actions across connected systems, which is a materially bigger claim than answering a question from a document.

Copilot, which assists your human agents rather than replacing them, is sold separately at $50 an agent a month billed annually and can be added to Professional and higher plans. These are Zendesk's published list figures on the checked date, and enterprise pricing is negotiated. Prices move, so check theirs and ours before deciding.

Reasons to choose Zendesk instead

Written to be used rather than to be waved at. If any of these describe you, this is the wrong product and the rest of the page will not change that.

  • You already run Zendesk. The AI grounds itself in the help centre you have already written and the policies you have already configured, which is a setup cost you have effectively already paid.
  • You need the AI to do things, not just say things. Zendesk describes multi step workflows and actions taken across connected systems. This product has no live order lookup, no account lookup and no ability to act on anything.
  • Your customers arrive by email and phone as well as chat. Zendesk covers those. Askably has no email agent, no phone and no voice at any tier.
  • Procurement is involved. Enterprise identity, compliance commitments and service level agreements are Zendesk's home ground, and a small vendor with a flat price list cannot substitute for them.
  • Your resolution volume fits inside the included allowance. If it does, the marginal AI cost is nothing, and a flat $29 or $99 a month is simply money you did not need to spend.

Reasons to choose this one

  • No seats and no resolution meter. $29 a month for 1,000 replies, $99 for 5,000, $299 for unlimited replies across ten assistants, and a free tier at $0.
  • Answers carry numbered citations back to the source passage, so anyone can check where a claim came from without opening a support ticket about it.
  • The refusal is structural. Below the match threshold you set it never reaches the model, and returns the fallback wording you wrote. You also set the caution level, the reply length and how many passages are retrieved.
  • Setup is one script tag and either a set of uploaded files or a crawl of your own site that obeys robots rules and follows your sitemap. There is no help centre to build first.
  • Everything visible is yours: colours and dark colours, fonts, radius, launcher icon and label, position, size, greeting, placeholder, suggested questions, disclaimer text and custom CSS, with no vendor name on any paid tier.

What we could not verify

Listing this is more useful than filling it in. Every line here is something that was not clearly published, or was behind a sign-up.

  • The size of the included resolution allowance on each plan was not stated on the pages read.
  • The price of each resolution tier, and how a resolution is assigned to a tier, is not published.
  • Monthly rather than annual billing figures for each suite plan were not visible alongside the annual ones.

Questions

Can this replace Zendesk?
No, and it is not trying to. There is no ticketing, no shared inbox, no routing, no help centre hosting and no voice. It replaces the front line question answering on your website and nothing else.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on the allowance. If your resolutions fit inside the Zendesk allowance you already pay for, Zendesk costs nothing extra and this costs $29 a month. If you are buying seats you do not otherwise need, the flat price wins. Do the arithmetic on your own numbers.
Can it look up an order or an account like a Zendesk agent can?
Not on its own. It answers from indexed material. There is no live order or account lookup without connecting a separate data source yourself.
How does it behave when the material does not cover the question?
It refuses, in wording you wrote, without reaching the model. That is a threshold check rather than a tone instruction, so it does not depend on the model choosing to be careful.
